Part 2:  MagnaFlow Cat Back Exhaust

magnaflow.jpg

Now that we have the ECU re-flashed and our cold air intake installed.  It only makes sense that we let the B7 exhale as efficiently as it inhales.  MagnaFlow are no strangers when it comes to making killer exhaust systems.  Heck, they've been doing it for over 25 years now. Not only do the MagnaFlow systems look great with their beefy welds and gorgeous stainless steel, they sound amazing as well!  With MagnaFlow you get a great throaty tone on the outside of the car and a pleasant non-intrusive tone inside that allows you to listen to tunes or carry on a conversation without excessive volume increase.   But wait...there's more!  More you say??  Yep...you also get gains of 10HP and 15 foot pounds of torque!  In conclusion, the MagnaFlow cat back system has everything we want and at a price that won't break the bank.  Sold. Let's do this.

Step 1:  Remove Stock Exhaust
Ah yes, this rusty, tiny, crimped stock exhaust system must go.  Heat up the clamps a little for easy removal and begin removing where the down pipe meets the exhaust tubing. Continue to remove clamps until stock system is ready for removal.  It helps to have a second set of hands around to help keep things secure and elevated before removing the old system.  It also prevents it from falling on your head.

Step 2:  Install MagnaFlow Exhaust
Once you get the stock system removed you'll immediately notice some differences between it and the new MagnaFlow system.  First, the stock system is heavy as #@!  Second, the pipes and tips are tiny when compared to those of the MagnaFlow system and finally, the frigging pipes are crimped where they bend. Never mind the fact that the MagnaFlow gear is a gorgeous silver, almost blue stainless steel.   To install the new MagnaFlow system you really just need to reverse your removal process of the stock system.  The pics below pretty much tell the story.  It is worth noting though that you'll need a couple of extra clamps as the MagnaFlow kit doesn't come with those.  You'll also need to spend a little time adjusting the mufflers and tips so that you get them aligned just right.  Other than that, fire 'er up and enjoy!

The Bottom Line:
MagnaFlow Stainless Steel Cat Back Exhaust System - $1200
Clamps- $30
Labor at an estimated 1.5 hours- $150
TOTAL:  $1380 not including shipping and taxes

The Result:
Once we had the new MagnaFlow system installed, tightened up and the tips properly adjusted we fired the A4 up and were instantly impressed.  The sound was worth the price of admission.  Then, we jumped in and hit the gas and were immediately treated to better throttle response along with noticeably more punch.  Getting onto the freeway and opening her up was pure pleasure.  Huge thanks to MagnaFlow for this great system!
