Road Atlanta, May 9 & 10, 2008
I saw my first Formula D competition
at Road Atlanta when they hosted
the inaugural event back in 2004. It
was as exciting then and it is today.
From the first time I saw an AE86
go up against the Mopar sponsored
Viper SRT I was hooked! Up to this
point my main exposure to drift
was Initial D DVDs and of course
the AE86 was a featured car in that
series. I thought, "Well it's a cartoon
and how awesome could a car that
looked like my mom's old Datsun
B210 really be"? I was going to find
out, first hand, just how awesome it
really is!
But hold on there, let's not get all nostalgic. Let's talk about the here and now, not then. There are no bad seats at this event. Road Atlanta saw fit to provide enough room for a few thousand spectators. All the action is up front and personal hence the name "Feel the Heat"! The vendor area was buzzing as always and the girls were looking good. I love Formula D event's because not only do they provide great entertainment all day long (the Circuit City Guitar Hero III competition was a nice touch) but they're really well organized. That means a lot to a guy who's attended a few events in his day.
This FD event was particularly exciting as it marked the return of Rhys Millen. After recovering from a stunt gone bad in Vegas back in January, Rhys made his first FD appearance this year. And what an appearance! Rhys took home the gold with Takatori taking silver and Tuerck landing bronze. Yoshihara landed 4th making for total Pontiac domination!
