View gallery
Phots by Eddie Garcia

Formula DRIFT returned to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Round 4: All In. Champion Tanner Foust takes the victory in his Rockstar / Hankook Scion Racing tC, while Chris Forsberg in the NOS Energy Drink / Maxxis Nissan 350Z moves to the top position overall in the chase for the Formula DRIFT Pro Championship.

For the 2nd consecutive year, Formula DRIFT returned to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 2-day weekend event was filled with non-stop Formula DRIFT and Pro Am action. Fans were also treated to the Jtuned Auto Gallery car show, Wicked H.P. drag competition, and Bikini Jam.

"Las Vegas continues to be one of the top destinations for the circuit despite the triple digit weather," said Ryan Sage, vice president of marketing and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. "The fans continue to come out in droves and we had another sold out event. The drivers continue to step up their level of drifting and we're seeing a real chase for the Championship."

Chris Forsberg took over the point lead after a close battle with Ryan Tuerck, who was ranked #2 going into the event, in the Great 8 round. Forsberg then went on to defeat Tyler McQuarrie, in the Falken Tire Nissan 350Z, in the consolation round for 3rd place. The final battle was between Hankook Tire teammates Tanner Foust and Ryuji Miki, piloting the APEXi / Hankook Mazda RX-7. Foust proved why he is the returning champion and blinded Miki in the first run with a cloud of thick smoke that caused Miki to lose his drift, while giving chase in their first tandem run giving Foust the advantage. With a solid 2nd run, Foust was able to sit on top of the podium once again.

"The Rockstar team and I went from zero to hero after failing to qualify for the main competition last event," said Formula DRIFT champion Tanner Foust, winner of Round 4: All In. "I am so proud of my team and they worked hard to fix the issues of the Rockstar Scion tC and I now feel comfortable and feel that this car has more potential than the Nissan 350Z ever had."

Formula DRIFT returns to Evergreen Speedway on August 8-9. Tickets are on-sale now.

Darren McNamara in the Falken Tires / Sears Auto Center Saturn Sky took the victory and the lead for the Formula DRIFT Championship point standings. Team Falken Tires finished the event strong filling the top 3 podium positions.

Despite the initial rain on Friday, the skies cleared for the main competition at Wall Speedway setting the stage for a great event. The fans were treated to temperatures in the mid 70's and partly cloudy skies. Thousands of fans packed the grandstands of Wall Speedway and witnessed another spectacular drifting competition of the season.

"It was a trying event for our staff and for the teams given the rain on Friday forcing us to pack all the action into one day," said Ryan Sage, vice president of marketing and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. "Yet at the end it was a huge payoff for everyone. Team Falken put together an incredible showing and swept the podium."

For the first time Team Falken took each position on the podium with Tyler McQuarrie in the Falken Nissan 350Z taking 3rd place, Vaughn Gittin Jr. in the Falken / Ford Racing Mustang GT taking 2nd place, and Darren McNamara in the Falken / Sears Auto Center Saturn Sky taking the victory and moving into 1st place overall in the Formula DRIFT point standings. Hometown hero, Ryan Tuerck moved into 2nd place overall in the Mobil 1 / Gardella Racing Pontiac Solstice right in front of Round 2 winner, Chris Forsberg in the NOS Energy Drink / Maxxis Nissan 350Z. The victory for McNamara, the 2006 Pro Drift Champion and 2007 Formula DRIFT Rookie of Year, was well earned after putting on a great performance and laying it all out on the line at this event.

"All day I felt completely comfortable and confident behind the Falken / Sears Auto Center Saturn Sky," said Darren McNamara, winner of Round 3: The Gauntlet. "I couldn't have done this without the help of the Falken crew, Sears Auto Center, ASD, my girlfriend, and all my friends and family."

Hot Import Night at Englishtown NJ
Words and Photos by Eduardo Suarez

Why New Jersey? After a last minute change of venue from Shea Stadium parking lot in NY to a fully equipped drag racing venue in New Jersey I wondered, "Is anyone even going to bother checking the website or drive 40 minutes south of New York City?" Well the day came and I started driving down to the event in a cloudy dark day, after many toll booths, plenty of skinny back roads and lost twice I finally made it.

Upon arriving and easily parking I proceeded to cutting the long ticket lines with my pass (LOL...) as soon as I entered the event the sky started to clear and that sweet smell of the burn-outs and burned fuel started flowing as I walked in. This HIN was kicking! The hundreds of cars lined up paying tribute to the JDM mentality were sharing space with a few modest modified domestics that welcomed me to the event lets not forget the weird US NAVY Camaro/airplane hybrid (WTF?). Anyway while looking for some friends walking towards the main stage I realized that now the demographics of HIN is getting way wider what ones was packed of 18-25 year old boys, now seemed like those boys got older and started building families which they are now bringing to HIN making it also a family event.

This event was the best I seen in the last couple years hands down even including those that have a big yellow-headed mascot (LOL). This event had a nice mix of trends starting by a few classic wide-body 350Zs and a long formation of JDM RSX and Intregras without forgetting ...The girls! There were more of them than I remember seeing at any HIN before, all dancing to the beat of some booth always friendly and approachable, you gotta love that!

The drifting show pulled the biggest crowd mostly thanks to the NOS energy-drink team and the local drifting enthusiasts that burned rubber like there is no tomorrow and most importantly showing the crowd a fun, fast and smoky great time of course animated by the lovely Alicia Whitten and Corissa Furr who made it the biggest high light of the night. As the night was ending the event ended with a flashy go-go dancing competition and finally the awards. Well worth the long drive sorry for the ones who decided to stay home washing the car.

Round #2 - STAGE IS SET AS AMERICA'S PREMIER DRIFTING SERIES - THE D1 GRAND PRIX - HEADS TO MIAMI

After a three-year absence in the United States, the D1 Grand Prix made its comeback on May 2, at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Race fans cheered as Daigo Saito and his Toyota Chaser grabbed the top spot in the first of four scheduled rounds in the 2009 D1GP USA Championship Points Series. Competitors from around the world with gather again Saturday, May 30 at Gulfstream Park Raceway in Hallandale Beach, FL for the second round of D1GP USA's 2009 series. D1GP USA opted to switch locations to accommodate larger crowds.

"Our first event back in the U.S. proved an overwhelming success for the competitors and the crowds. With the popularity of drifting rapidly growing, we upgraded our venue in Miami to accommodate the increasing number fans and drivers," said Terence Jenkins, SVP of Operations and D1GP USA Competition Director. "We are looking forward to once again exceeding expectations with an exciting and highly competitive event in Miami."

The opening round of the 2009 series also marked the first-ever use of the D1GP USA's Pro 1 system (derived from Racelogic's Driftbox) in drifting competition history. Many of the questions at the post-event press conference were centered on this new technology, which is designed to reduce subjectivity in the scoring process. The drivers in the press conference supported the use of the system and the fair and unbiased judging of D1GP USA.

Overall, the D1GP's return to the United States was a resounding success with the high level of competition and the non-stop action from the start of practice on Friday morning to the final tandem run on Saturday evening. Winners from the Miami event will join the top three competitors from the first round of 2009 D1GP USA Championship Points Series in Anaheim Daigo Saito, Nobushige Kumakubo and rookie American driver Forrest Wang in the Series Finals.

Formula D 2009 Season Preview

The 6th season of Formula DRIFT is right around the corner. FD is the premiere drifting series in North America having brought more "firsts" to the sport than any other organization and 2009 will prove to be no exception to that high standard. Though this economic downturn has been tough on all of us, many new vehicles will be making debuts at the first round slated to go off April 10-11th at the historic downtown Long Beach street course. Shining automotive light Hyundai, announced a campaign with Rhys Millen and the Genesis Coupe. Ford launched their 2010 Ford Mustang with Vaughn Gittin Jr. Finally, Samuel Hubinette will be piloting a brand new Mopar Dodge Challenger. All these amazing vehicles will launch their first appearances exclusively at Formula Drift Long Beach.

The Formula DRIFT Pro Championship brings seven epic events to the table at some of the best tracks in the country including Long Beach Grand Prix Street Course, Road Atlanta, Englishtown Raceway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Evergreen Speedway, Infineon Raceway and of course Irwindale Speedway, the infamous "House of Drift". FD currently has over 60 licensed pro drivers and for 2009 will be adding a two-day format for some of their events to accommodate the barrage of amateurs coming into the sport. "This outreach program as well as other programs with other events and bodies will allow a fundamental and practical foundation to be built and also show a true path to becoming a professional drifter." said Ryan Sage, VP of Marketing and Co-Founder of FD.

We have also heard that there may be some formatting changes similar to the Red Bull Drifting World Championship where the competition is all tandem and not just the top 16. If this is true, then fans have some real excitement ahead of them. Formula Drift is also keeping ticket prices low even though some of the events will be two days. Though tickets for other event series can be upwards of $30, FD will offer ticket prices starting at $23 for online purchases. This is great news for all of us watching our wallets this year! Go FD.

All The Right Moves

This season the D1GP USA is back in the United States and ever since their recent change in Management in Japan and their licensing of the brand in the U.S. to Southern California based Driven Events, D1GP USA has been making all the right moves.

D1GP USA first announced that it would pull out of traditional tracks and move to downtown stadium environments back in December. The events are scheduled for May 2nd in Anaheim, Ca.; May 30th at Dolphins Stadium in Miami, Fl.; July 18th at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA. & August 1st at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. This move by them allows them to create an atmosphere that is totally their own, not having to conform to the constraints of a traditional track venue and also makes it easier for attendees to get to.

Shortly after the announcement regarding the venues, they announced that the series would be a Championship Points Series format and that the initial list of Japanese drivers competing at every event would be Saito, Imamura, Nomura, Ueno, Yoshioka, Kumakubo & Tanaka. Maybe the most significant move by D1GP USA was the change in their rulebook and judging format. The judging this year will incorporate the D1GP Pro 1 system which is proprietary technology derived from the Drift Box System. The system transmits data at a rate of 10 times per second from the car to the judging tower and this data will account for 75% of the overall score leaving just line and style to account for the other 25%. This 25% is left up to the average scores of the 3 appointed judges making D1GP USA the most transparent and fair judging system there is.

The judges will consist of a 3 judge panel made up of 1 Japanese judge (Keiichi Tsuchiya, Daijaro Inada or Manabu Suzuki) and the other 2 judges will be appointed American judges. One of them already named is Adam Andretti. Adam Andretti is no stranger to getting cars sideways, but this is not the reason for his selection. Due to the implementation of the D1 GP Pro1 system, the judges are now responsible for accurately scoring only the Line and Style criteria. Adam, just like any professional racecar driver has spent years studying and practicing different lines around all types of track configurations in just about every type of racecar. With that Adam brings an unbiased critical eye to the judges' table. Regarding Style? Well if you are a driver, then it's up to you to impress one of the world's most famous family names in auto history with your mad skills. The eventual goal is to get Adam in a car driving in D1GP USA and that would really be something for the growth of this industry. The other judge has not yet been named.

D1GP USA has also seemed to make all the right moves in terms of entertainment value in and around the event. Media nights, pre parties & other forms of entertainment on & off the track are planned. The events are being so well received by the public that VIP tickets for their Anaheim event sold out in just two weeks. D1GP USA was then prompted to expand the VIP area to accommodate the demand. The other locations are not far behind. We are told that a major TV deal is in the works and by the time of this article being published that it will likely already be announced.

D1GP USA also recently implemented the D1 Underground (www.d1underground.com) which connects local event promoters with local drivers. The program is designed to help both through D1GP USA's promotional arm and to elevate the grassroots of drifting. A move that has netted them 300 drivers and over 50 grassroots events in under 30 days. This will undoubtedly deliver the grassroots of drifting and the future stars of drifting to D1's doorstep while helping the growth of the industry at the same time.
It will be interesting to see what's next from D1GP USA.

Redline Time Attack Season Preview

The 2009 Redline Time Attack season is about ready to kick off! The weekend of March 28th-29th will see top Time Attack teams from across the United States do battle at Buttonwillow Raceway just outside of Bakersfield, California. There have been a number of changes made during the offseason, most notably the allowance of Full Race Slicks in Unlimited Class, the initiative of Redline Time Attack Franchise Teams and the creation of a "Rookie Class" within Street Class (to make the events more accessible to enthusiasts just getting started).

Redline will host a total of 8 events in the 2009 Season Championship, visiting several new facilities (Autobahn Country Club, Carolina Motorsports Park & Englishtown Raceway). We will see the return of past champions from 2007 and 2008 in FactorX in their Acura NSX out of Las Vegas and AMS Performance in their new Evolution X out of Chicago, both competing in the Unlimited Class. Attempting to knock the past champions off the podium in Unlimited Class are Sierra-Sierra in their Evo 9, Fontana Nissan with a 350z, GST Motorsports in their proven Impreza L, TopSpeed in their Subaru Impreza and Chris Rado in his World Racing Scion tC.

The competition in Modified Class is going to intensify this year as we see a number of past Street Class Champions step up a Class. JC Meynet, reigning Street Class Grand Champion, in his Harman Motive sponsored STI will move to Modified AWD. Billy Brooks, formerly the driver for COBB and a very talented SCCA Auto-X driver, will pilot the MODE Racing Hyundai Genesis. Joining JC and Billy as Franchised Teams in Modified Class will be reigning Modified AWD National Champion James Elterman (Takata Time Attack Subaru), Corey Neuer (NNI Racing Subaru), Mike Bonanni (DDMTimeAttack.com 350z) and Ryan Gates (Gates311.com).

Buttonwillow Raceway at the end of March is certainly where any true enthusiast will want to be! If you can't make it to the event, check out the new RedlineTimeAttack.com website, launching the week of March 23rd, featuring live updates from the event!

This NightShift event at Pomona offered an enormous variety of attractions to all kinds of car enthusiasts. Some of the features included the car show, the street bike contest, the Valvoline Dyno display, the Boost FreeStyle MX jumping, the Dunlop drifting demo, and many good looking models. There was more than enough to keep you entertained throughout the evening. Free NOS Energy drink booths at every corner kept you going all night.

The car show itself had hundreds of modified tuner vehicles including drift cars, European tuners, American muscle cars, tricked out SUV’s, and even custom motorcycles. Some impressive displays included the wide body High End Infinity G37 with custom turbos and the Bridgestone BMW coupe equipped with modifications for serious time attack racing. Some other crazy cars included a single seater Supra that replaced the passenger seat with three extra amplifiers and a brand new Dodge SRT Challenger parked at the front entrance.

Several displays of serious skill and control throughout the evening provided unique entertainment for the audience. The Dunlop drifting demo was a popular event lining the fences along the track with excited spectators. The DriftSpeed team provided a series of crowd pleasing professional drift trials, creating the most noise and smoke out of all the cars to hit the track. The street bike demo was another impressive show of ability. The riders dominated their superbikes performing burnouts, wheelies, stoppies and other stunts flawlessly. As the sun set over the surrounding hills of Pomona, the MX team set up their lights and the bikers performed huge jumps over the long Boost Mobile van.

Round 3 of the XDL Sportbike Freestyle Championship took place on the hallowed asphalt of the NHRA drag strip, offering the riders some of the best traction of the season. Nick Apex, Bill Dixon and Aaron Colton all scored within one point of each other making for one of the closest competitions in XDL’s young history. The event also marked the halfway point of the 2008 season and slowly a points picture is emerging with at least 8 riders in realistic contention for the championship, including Brocha, Flores, Dixon, Hart, Colton, Emmons, Farris and Niles. But should any of these riders falter, there are another five ready to pounce.

Nick Brocha came in expecting a top 5 after a tough Nashville outing, and bettered his expectations by taking his second win of the year. "I was so disappointed with how I rode at Nashville... which was good because then I did what I always do; I get mad, I go home and I ride every day for hours and hours in the 106 degree Vegas heat. So my expectation was to come here and do well." As if winning the main wasn't enough, Brocha also took Circle Challenge by breaking Andy Niles’ win streak. Said a smiling Nick Brocha: "Any time I make money I'm extatic, but beating Andy Niles in Circle Challenge is something I thought I would never do."

Bill Dixon repeated his solid 2nd place finish from Nashville, putting him in the thick of the points chase. Asked about his expectations for Pomona, he said: "I came here, drove 2,600 miles so I wanted to do well enough to pay for the trip." He did, but it wasn't easy. "I had a tire problem and I don’t know why...I definitely could have rode better." Dixon added to his paycheck by also taking Target Stoppie by less than three tenths of a second, one of the closest finishes in recent memory.

Aaron Colton took top qualifying honors and with it, the bonus point. In the main event Colton thought he had the competition covered for his first win of the season but ended up a disappointing third. "After qualifying and after riding (my run) I thought I was going to win it." Stated Colton: "I'm not trying to be like a Mladin here or anything and complain about everything...but when I heard the results I felt like I got royally shafted." Colton filed a protest and video of the run is being reviewed to see if any changes are merited.

Alex Flores, who predicted a Pomona win after Nashville, couldn’t deliver but still leaves tied for first in the championship. "I had a little crash in practice at the spot...but that is no excuse. I just need to ride harder next time." Said Flores about his finish: "I’m happy with the results. 4th isn’t bad. I’m still in the points chase." He plans to pull through at Indy: "I’m bringing everything I’ve got. I’m going to train all month and ride my best."

Next up is Indy on September 12th & 13th, the biggest event of the year. All riders will bring their A-game so don’t miss the action. If you are in town for MotoGP, stop by the downtown XDL venue for some hot nighttime sportbike freestyle action. All competitions and demos start after track activities at Indianapolis Motor Speedway are concluded and the venue is open until midnight.
HIN Seattle was smokin'! There were loads of tuned cars there ranging from modern tuners of all types and sizes, an old school original Skyline, to exotics like Lamborghinis and a Spyker C8. Three of the Formula Drift cars were on display for all to admire. If you went for the ladies, music, or events you wouldn't have been disappointed either. Three top HIN models were in the Boost Mobile area and were on hand to pose with fans and autograph posters. On the Boost Mobile stage there were several dance groups battling to the beats of the DJ and the MC. One dancer who was a mere six years old busted his moves ranging from crazy break dancing to straight up hip hop.
