I visit Tokyo regularly. Sometimes for work but mostly for pleasure. Tokyo is the most congested urban city on the planet but I love the chaos, the food, the culture and especially the technology.
Japan is a global leader in many areas of technology and what better place to see the future of gadgets and gizmos than in Akihabara, Tokyo's world famous Electric Town. There, you'll find a wide range of contemporary electronic, computer, anime and Otaku fetish products. Otaku is a term used in Japan to refer to any kind of "geek." I guess I fall into that category because I felt like a kid in a candy store when I was there. Not only can you buy digital cameras smaller than a credit card, but I fell in love with "Pleo" the pet dinosaur. Pleo is a robotic dinosaur designed to emulate the appearance and behavior of a week-old baby Camarasaurus. It was designed by Caleb Chung, the co-creator of the Furby. The amazing thing about Pleo is that it will "learn" from its experiences and environment through sophisticated artificial intelligence.
I pretty much spent the entire afternoon playing with all sorts of new toys (sorry, no sex toys here boys) and worked up quite an appetite so I stopped by a vending machine that served hot Ramen noodles. How cool is that? Then I hit this spot called the Maid café - a crazy cafe where sexy girls dress up in maid costumes literally spoon feed you curry giving new meaning to the phrase "curry in a hurry".
Tokyo is a wild city and the only sane way to travel it is to hop on a train. The train system there is truly amazing and super efficient. Tickets are all magnetic for simple calculations, trains are never late, always arriving and leaving on time and hundreds of thousands of people use them to commute daily. On them you¡¯ll find bathrooms that offer innovative creature comforts like heated toilets that double as bidets and automatic flushing sounds. Those come in real handy when you're "dropping the kids off at the pool" ; )
When it comes to personal grooming, leave it to the Japanese to invent something called the "Digi-Perm". This contraption made prepping for my photo-shoot super fast and easy. This machine heats up rollers in your hair as they plug the wires to a base and in 15 minutes, voila! Any form of curls, tight curls or waves is instantly created. The style remains temporary for about 3 months and it doesn't damage your hair at all. This patented technology only exists in Japan and is very cool when you're in my line of work.
Yep, there's no question that if you're a tech geek or "Otakus" like me, Tokyo is a must visit destination. With tons to see and do and so many marvels of technology to experience, Tokyo truly is the ultimate playground!
Be True to Yourself,
Sunisa
