We just got back from a blistering day at the Lake Elsinore Motocross Park this past weekend for the GCRallyX R4 event. RallyX (or RallyCross), is an entry level performance driving event for people wanting to get started in rallying; it’s like autocross but on dirt. Drivers still compete individually on a traffic cone-lined course trying to get the fastest time of the day but the surface they run on is dirt, mud and other filthy stuff that your momma told you to stay away from as a kid.
The GCRallyX R4 class was designed for AWD or 4WD vehicles running competition rally tires. This excluded a bunch of kids who only terrorize the elderly on the freeways with their STi’s and Evo’s so we approve of this rule. The other amazing thing about this event was that the organizers held a European-style RallyCross demo on the CORR Off-road track at the facility; think old school Mickey Thompson’s stadium style racing but with modern day rally cars.
The demo featured four cars running side-by-side through the course set up for off-road trucks and motorcycles; complete with whoops, banked turns and big tabletop jumps. We have a feeling that this type of stadium style RallyCross is only the beginning of what the American Rally movement could evolve into. Check out www.livesockets.com for videos of this killer event soon.
The Redline Time Attack series… rolled into Miller Motorsports Park in Utah for their third event of the year. This one held a few nice surprises when the final results were announced. None more so than Matt Andrews taking the Modified class overall win in the RobiSpec Flyin’ Miata Time Attack Car. He took out STi’s and Evo’s on his way to the overall win in class. We’re going to start calling STi’s and Evo’s gay compared to the Miata now.
Other surprises included a no-show by the Factor X NSX who didn’t have the car built in time for this event. We were hoping to get a sneak peek at this car competing against the C-West/BC/Hankook S2000 at Miller but this is going to have to wait until the next one at California Speedway July 19-20th.
Speaking of this upcoming event, we are excited to be producing the inaugural Live Sockets Battle Series within this one on July 20th. The series features head-to-head racing, pitting some of the country’s top tuners against one another on California Speedway’s 21 turn, 2.8 miles Auto Competition Course. Visit www.livesockets.com for full details on the teams, cars and drivers set to do battle in the coming weeks.
