Nick Brocha is one of the top stunt bike riders in the country and the present leader of the XDL Sportbike Freestyle Championship. But if it weren’t for a little twist of fate, he might have become a drifter.
Early indications pointed to Nick being the next Takumi, racing up and down Mt. Akina delivering tofu. He grew up in the countryside of Washington State in close proximity to twisty country roads that were rarely visited by cops. At age 14 he started heading up to Alaska every year to work on a fishing trawler and as a result always had cash to buy cars. Nick started racing on the back roads in one of about 30 VW Rabbits he would end up owning. Anything fast was good, but faster was better. Tuning came naturally and the progression led to a series of interesting cars, including a Datsun 510 with an SR20, a ’93 RX7 and an RX3 rally car with a bridge ported 13B running a 4-barrel Holley.
By now Nick was solidly into street racing, pitting his ’81 13.2 second Rabbit 4-door with a custom Mitsubishi 20G turbo against unsuspecting Honda kids running 15s. At the time, cross brand knowledge was still rare, so the average Honda kid didn’t know a fast VW if he saw one and Nick made a small fortune on the streets. He also ran a shop called Apex Motorsports building.
